APRN Daughter of Mayor Hank Luzzi Busted By Feds

APRN Michele Rene Luzzi Muzyka, of Cheshire, was recently busted by the FBI agents after an undercover operation revealed that she was prescribing a combination of large quantities of benzodiazepines, such as Xanax, and stimulants, such as Adderall. Two separate Walgreens pharmacists reported her to the Feds. The Feds conducted an undercover operation in which they sent patients to treat with Luzzi. Michele agreed to provide a prescription for whatever the patients requested, for the most part, in exchange for $200 in cash.

Michele was the daughter of the late great East Haven Mayor Hank Luzzi. Michele is the sister of current East Haven Town Attorney Michael J. Luzzi. Michael J. Luzzi was recently fined $5,000.00 by the Freedom of Information Commission for stonewalling a request for public records.

APRN Luzzi prescribed drugs to a pregnant woman and her partner who had a child while they were high on drugs. DCF brought a case against the couple for abuse and neglect, which was appealed to the Connecticut Appellate Court. The Court stated the following in its decision: “The department has been involved with A and M throughout their entire lives. The department received a report in March, 2019, when A was born, that A’s mother, Lindsay B., was taking methadone and benzodiazepines, leading the hospital to treat the newborn A under the neonatal abstinence syndrome protocol. M was born in the kitchen of Lindsay B.’s home in August, 2020. Lindsay B. had received no prenatal care during her pregnancy with M. At the hospital where M and Lindsay B. were transported after M’s birth, both Lindsay B. and her partner were “observed to be passed out.” Although Lindsay B. was “slurring her speech, drooling, and falling asleep mid-sentence,” her partner advocated for her to receive benzodiazepines. At one point, hospital staff were unable to wake her partner, who was sleeping while holding newborn M, even by touching his arm. M showed symptoms of neonatal abstinence syndrome and remained in the hospital for two weeks after her birth, during which time the respondent did not return to visit. Following M’s birth, the department became concerned about her partner’s substance use. Specifically, there were instances when her partner appeared impaired, and he belatedly disclosed that he was receiving mental health medication management from Michelle Luzzi Muzyka, an advanced practice registered nurse, who also had been treating Lindsay B. He testified that, in March, 2019, he began treating with Luzzi Muzyka, whom he saw every two months or sometimes every three months for panic attacks and anxiety. Luzzi Muzyka prescribed the respondent alprazolam, which is a benzodiazepine, and gabapentin. She reported that he already had been prescribed his medication at the time he began seeing her. Luzzi Muzyka stated that she was treating him for generalized anxiety disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. DCF recommended that he receive a “second opinion” in the form of a psychiatric reevaluation and complete a psychiatric evaluation with a provider other than Luzzi Muzyka to determine if there were different medications that he could be taking to treat his symptoms instead of relying on the medication that he was taking.

The full case is in this link. The case was cited in the indictment filed against Luzzi Muzyka, below.

In case you are unfamiliar with the town of East Haven, it is a suburb located north of New Haven on Long Island Sound. It has been unfairly stereotyped as a town populated by goombas and gangsters. An old Xmas song in East Haven Youtube video was created some years ago which added to this stereotype.
